Behind the Scenes - Movember

January 11, 2011 12:00am

Since our last Movember shoot in 2009, I promised myself to create something more dramatic, emotional and more "in the moment" as apposed to heavily contrived every day imagery. So this year, I somehow convinced other Mo Bro's to star as 70's Americana Gangsters. Surprisingly, everyone was in!

Not without help from Bang Doll Vintage and BSE Productions, our shoot would've failed to look genuine and real. To some degree, I was envisaging the clothing, props, and grading treatment to take a life-like situation into a more illustrated and surreal perspective. And to achieve this, I photographed a number of background elements to create the scene and then photograph my talent individually. Not only does this produce a more surreal effect, but gives more control and focus with each character. Resulting in perfect expressions, lighting, angles and overall mood.

Although our group was very focused in achieving a brilliant image, we had an absolute ball. With beer and wine free flowing (and no cocaine, but plenty of self raising flower) the set quickly transitioned into a party where everyone relaxed. As you can see below.

Jason (assistant) with the blower to create the flapping/mutated mouth expression. As if it were distorted from the punch.

We did shoot an extra character (yes, this is me) in case we had room in the photograph, but I decided to leave it out as the shot was already congesting.

The girls unleashing their inner gangster. Who knows what Chloe was thinking when she dropped to the floor to create these two pics. Funny stuff!
